Breaking! PepsiCo & Beyond Meat Partner To Launch ‘The PLANeT Partnership’ To Create New Plant-Based Protein Offerings

Today, PepsiCo, Inc. and Beyond Meat announced that they will form The PLANeT Partnership, LLC, a joint venture to develop, produce, and market innovative snack and beverage products made from plant-based protein. The joint venture will leverage Beyond Meat’s leading technology in plant-based protein development and PepsiCo’s world-class marketing and commercial capabilities to create and scale new snack and beverage options.

“We are thrilled to formally join forces with PepsiCo in The PLANeT Partnership, a joint venture that unites the tremendous depth and breadth of their distribution and marketing capabilities with our leading innovation in plant-based protein. We look forward to unlocking new categories and product lines that will inspire positive choices for both people and the planet,” Ethan Brown, Founder and CEO of Beyond Meat said in a statement. “PepsiCo represents the ideal partner for us in this exciting endeavor, one of global reach and importance.”

The new joint venture follows efforts by PepsiCo to help build a more sustainable food system. Among the key pillars of that effort are using positive ingredients; expanding the company’s portfolio of products that have been grown and made sustainably, through tools and techniques like regenerative agriculture, net water, and carbon-neutral production plants; making it easier for consumers focused on health and wellness to consume products on the go.

“Plant-based proteins represent an exciting growth opportunity for us, a new frontier in our efforts to build a more sustainable food system and be a positive force for people and the planet, while meeting consumer demand for an expanded portfolio of more nutritious products,” stated Ram Krishnan, PepsiCo’s Global Chief Commercial Officer, who recognized Beyond Meat as a cutting-edge innovator in this rapidly growing category.

Beyond Meat shares PepsiCo’s passion for creating products that are good for both people and the planet, using simple, plant-based ingredients, with no GMOs or bioengineered ingredients. The company believes that there is a better way to feed our future and that the positive choices we all make, no matter how small, can have a great impact on our personal health and the health of our environment.

While WAN and Peace 4 Animals were previously wary of promoting PepsiCo due to its former use of Conflict Palm Oil, in February 2020, the company notably pledged to no longer purchase palm oil from any direct or indirect supplier involved in deforestation over the last four years. A step in the right direction.

Breaking! England Bans Plastic Straws And Other Plastic Items In An Effort To Protect Our Planet From Plastic Pollution

Last week, England’s ban on supplying plastic straws, stirrers, and plastic-stemmed cotton buds came into effect, marking yet another major step in the Government’s fight against single-use plastic waste to protect the environment and clean up our oceans.

“Single-use plastics cause real devastation to the environment and this government is firmly committed to tackling this issue head on,” Environment Secretary George Eustice said in a statement, further explaining that England’s 5 pounds charge on single-use plastic bags has successfully cut sales by 95% in the main supermarkets. Last month, ministers also confirmed that the single-use plastic bag charge would be increased to 10 pounds and extended to all retailers beginning on April 1, 2021.

“The ban on straws, stirrers, and cotton buds is just the next step in our battle against plastic pollution and our pledge to protect our ocean and the environment for future generations,” continued Eustice. There are exceptions put in place for people with disabilities and those with medical conditions.

It is estimated that 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers, and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds are used in England every year, many of which find their way into our oceans. By banning the supply of these items, marine life will have increased protection and the country moves one step closer to its ambition of eliminating all avoidable plastic waste, as set out in its 25 Year Environment Plan.

Globally, it is estimated that between 4.8 and 12.7 million tons of plastic enter our oceans every year resulting in the injury and death of many species of marine life. The UK is leading on a wide program of overseas engagements, including through the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Alliance and the Commonwealth Litter Programme, aiming to prevent plastic waste from reaching the ocean in the first place.

The government is also committed to launching a £500 million Blue Planet Fund to protect the ocean from plastic pollution, warming sea temperatures, and overfishing.

Other key government actions on plastics include a world-leading ban on microbeads, consulting on introducing a deposit return plan to drive up the recycling of single-use drink containers, and committing to a ban on the export of polluting plastic waste to non-OECD countries.

The government will also introduce a new tax on plastic packaging to encourage greater use of recycled plastic.
